Founded in 1543 as the capital of the Spanish Colonies what is now Central America, was abandoned 1773, leaving behind buildings of the XVII and XVIII. It is truly the jewel of America, offering to visitors its colonial history, art galleries, exhibitions, folk art, art galleries, films, Indigenous markets and culture for tourism in general. It is also home to a wide range of Spanish language schools, attracting students from around the world. Today, Antigua is a UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site since 1979.
